My coop is just sitting on the ground....the run portion is sitting on mostly bare ground/dirt and the house part is just bare wood floor with a removable poop board & roosts...

But I left them free range the yard most days so they are out running in the grass all day long...

if they lived their whole time confined I figured that would be different.

I'm not sure how putting wood chips, shavings, sand, gravel, peat moss, etc would be much different than regular dirt.

There is nothing wrong with your set up. The main reason for having something else is usually for ease of cleaning or keeping the run from becoming a muddy mess. If neither of these is an issue, why change just to change?

But if you find that your floor is becoming mucky, pine shavings or even cheaper pine needle mulch from under a pine tree will help soak up the muck and make it a little cleaner for your hens.

south texas is usually pretty dry...only gets damp/muddy occasionally and dries quick...

plus they got a separate pan of sand for dust baths and they are making dirt pits in a couple spots in the yard anyway...
