I am getting my first chicks today, I am such a newbie!
I have decided not to use commercial grain, can any one give me some advice on whats best to feed them?

Can I ask why you aren't going to use commercial feed? Is it a price thing or are you concerned about content? If its a content issue, check and see if you have a feed mill in your area. Our local feed mill makes its own feeds and buys the grains from local farmers.

I use a chicken feed that is grown and mixed by a company about 2 hours from me. Its cracked corn, wheat, cracked peas, wheat dried distillers grain, oyster shell, limestone and a vitamin-mineral pack. I just started feeding chick grit with it. My chicks love it! I like the fact that I know exactly what's in in and it is all non-GMO ingredients! Plus, they do deliveries to my area every week, so I don't have to go pick it up!

They mix 2 rations- a meatbuilder and a laying ration, so I'm set!!
