I picked up 4 pullets yesterday, they are 3-4 months old. They are huddling and sleeping on the sand covered floor. Seems to be like sleeping in a cold bed to me. Should I remove sand and put down pine shavings, just put the shavings on top of the sand or leave it the way it is?

I have just shavings in my coop and when I get new chickens they will sleep in the corner of the coop all snuggled together but shavings work good enough for me without other types of bedding

My chickens didn't know how to roost in the beginning either - they huddled on the floor in a feathered heap! No adult birds to train them...they didn't know what they were supposed to do.

So, I went into the coop right after dark for a couple of nights, picked them up and placed them on the roosts. It only took about two or three times of doing this, then they figured it out.
