Not what I was told.

Really? Maybe it's my little screen but the combs look kinda wide and bumpy rather than spiked but not flat enough for rose either. But, you have the best view.

I'm no expert. I'm new to chickens, but when I compare what they have to comb charts they appear to have a multi spike single. I'd say they've got 5or6 bumps. I'd say they probably look so wide because their heads are still fussy. But I am confused on the light sussex because a lot of these chicks have black up on their heads? I didn't see any light sussex colored like those. And they also have heavy black in their wings?

Update: I came out yesterday & chicks some how look completely different. They're skin tone is shifting to a dark yellow & they're black is evening out to a noticeable pattern. I'm almost certain now that I have Delawares. Thank you everyone for you help!

Hey Speckledhen......I just posted earlier about a Delaware I have, wondering if it's a roo.....I believe your comment with pics on here, has solidified my suspicion. I've got me a Delaware Rooster that I need to get rid of. I can probably have a rooster, but with all due respect to my neighbors, I chose not to. Wish I could keep him because I like a roosters interaction with his sister wives and watching how they rule a roost.

Too bad. Most are pretty decent roosters.

Hmmmmm... That's some very white skin. I'd say light Sussex except for those wonky combs. Might just be a cross.

Yeah, that isn't Delaware skin on those kids. I know that "baby" skin can start out pinkish, but my Delawares have bright yellow legs by the age you posted at a month old. The super black markings also are not really pure Delaware, especially on one of the chicks. It still could be a cross.

Lets get to the bottom of this using logic.....Where did you get the chicken?....If from a hatchery, what similar breeds does the hatchery sell?....Eliminate the ones not sold by the hatchery....Focus on the ones that are....Looks like either a Delaware or Silver Columbian Type cross to me.....Could be a Columbian Rock....But these are very rare....Cackle Hatchery has them this year for the first time......Light Sussex are also very rare in the USA and are not sold by most hatcheries....Sandhill in IA and a few small hatcheries, maybe.....Good looking chicken...Deserves a home..Good Luck..

Considering the crap that some hatcheries are putting out these days, it could be almost anything. Welp used to sell what they called "Delaware/Columbian Rock". Well, that sure tells a sad tale, doesn't it? And you ought to have seen the mess that my friend Yard Full 'o Rocks got when he got some supposed Columbian Rocks from a small hatchery out west. Oh, my, I can't even describe what they looked like. He has since gotten some awesome stock out of Canada and progressed in his breeding program. So, it's sometimes not as easy as what we think it is to determine what a bird is made of. Of course, if you aren't breeding and just want a healthy backyard flock of various birds/breeds, enjoy what you got and don't fret over it too much.

Unless, of course, you don't want the "Forrest Gump Special" aka "You never know what you're gonna get"
