I will be moving up to northern az soon ... I have 12 baby chicks but the corral they will share with the Alpaca's ... is nothing but dirt. Is this a bad thing for chickens? there are some trees for shade and I'm wondering if I should plant some grass in there?

I would think they would be fine. Just give them some "greens" from the grocery store, scratch grains and layer feed along with fresh water and they should be fine. Enjoy your new place!

where I work, they have 4 acres of irrigated GREEN everywhere ... their chickens get to scratch the grass to bits as they look for bugs. I am feeling sorry for mine and the lack of vegetation. At least mine won't have to suffer the HEAT of this valley! They might be grateful and accept the dirt!
I read somewhere on here how "chicken gardens " can be planted of foods they like to eat and foods that are good for them. Maybe I'll do a HUGE raised bed with plants for them but I'd have to fence off the area so the Paca's dont ruin it.

thanks for the support!

You can use a bird suet basket feeder when you give them their greens. Keeps better and doesn't get ruined quickly from the dirt.
