I agree with you 100% on good quality feed that is high enough protein for your birds.
I think it makes all the difference in the world.

Breeding slows down a lot this time of year as well, and I have trouble hatching my own birds' eggs in the winter. But for us addicts, that slight possibility that JUST ONE of those little eggies will hatch is enough to keep us going

Well 6 of my 8 fertile eggs from ChooksChick hatched! I've still got the other two in the hatcher. They just may hatch yet. I wanted to say that my worse month of hatching was October. Almost none of my eggs or my shipped eggs hatched. And I mean almost none. Out of 113 eggs that I set, I only got 7 chicks that hatched and only 5 survived. Between November and so far in December, I've hatched out 59 chicks and 7 ducklings out of a total of 72 eggs set.

I have another 17 in the hatcher and another 32 in the incubator due to hatch before I leave for NY on the 19th.

Anyway, the chicks that hatched from ChooksChick are EE's and they're the fattest, healthiest looking chickies. As soon as they're all dried off I'll take some pics of them!!

I think mine has something to do with the change in humidity of the house, though I have tried to keep it about the same in the incubator, but since we have turned off the air and turned off the heat, I have noticed that I am not getting as good a hatch rate. I need to make some adjustments there and it is tricky to find out just what works. What has been hatching for me irregardless of the incubator/humidity are my barred EE's and my F2 mille fleur Japanese. I have to think these two are tougher little birds. I also have had good luck lately with the mixed and splash Polish.

that's what i'm hoping, but i really don't think so.. i candled last night and there's still quite a bit of space.. the air cll is HUGE and i didn't see any movement.... i think it was slow to develop anyway and then

Doesn't sound promising. Getting pretty late in days, too, isn't it? Maybe in the Spring we'll have better luck.

We feed excellent feed, they get Purina Flock Raiser, unlimited oyster shell, and whatever bugs/grass/worms/who knows what wanders into their reach, so probably not a feed issue. I'm pretty sure they were packed pretty tight, too, I was afraid if I packed them any tighter they'd break. The swap eggs from the same parents in the October swap did great, five out of seven hatched and were healthy and strong. The shipping distance was much shorter, though, so maybe that had something to do with it. It might affect it if they travel in a truck for shipping or are put on a plane in an unheated unpressurized cargo area. I wonder how that effects hatchability?

Keeping my fingers crossed for your eggs in my bator. They look very happy and comfy in there.

I can hardly wait till it's far enough along to candle them.
