November Hatch-A-Long (2014)

I'm hoping to join you in November. My 'bator is currently in lockdown, so I've ordered eggs to be shipped Nov 3. I'm hoping the hens keep laying so my eggs can come! It's the chicken math... My husband was able to start this last batch for the class while I was out of town. Now they're due to hatch and he's out of town, so I ordered some for us so he can be here for a Thanksgiving hatch! But, uh... I didn't tell him yet...

How is it that I don't even HAVE chickens yet, and I'm already planning my next hatch...I so wish that Swedish Flower Hens were available in Australia. I love them.

It's very, very addicting! I can't have chickens where I live, but have 6 Pullets running around the back yard until someone complains. Oops! And 27 in the bator, 2 in the brooder. Can we say addicted to hatching? I'm already planning the next round!

I did my 7 day candle on the silkie and EE eggs I set on 10/21. I removed 4 silkie eggs. 2 had blood rings and the other 2 had not developed at all. 4 more eggs I wasn't sure of so they went back in to candle again next time. The EE eggs I couldn't tell for sure. One I think isn't developing but all 4 eggs have porous shells on top of being slightly darker shell coloring so I just put them all back and will try again next candle.

I also have 2 severely cracked eggs that I put nail polish over to attempt to hatch anyway. Both have good development in them so far. :)

How do I "officially" join this Hatch-a-long? I just put 4 eggs, laid today, under my BA hen. She is just over 7 months and started being broody yesterday. Initially, I took all of today's eggs because I wasn't sure it was a good time of year here in Oklahoma, but I see others in similar climates getting ready for November hatches. My flock consists of 10 BA hens and one BA roo, so if any chicks arrive at least I'll know what breed .
The weather just turned to #$^%, thunder and rain. It won't last long, but it messes up in internet connection. Hen got eggs at midnight, so 10/28/14, possible hatch date would be between 11/18 and 11/21. We'll see

Happy Feathers, I think you just joined by saying you want to, LOL. Welcome.

One of my light bulbs blew out so replaced it with a 25 watt like the other one is, noticed not long after that that the temp spiked to 104, had to change back to the other type of bulb. Not sure why it did that when I have the thermostat in there. I will have to do some experimenting and tweeking after this hatch. The second bulb is in there to keep the temp from dropping to 0 in case the main bulb blows but it does not get as hot.
Also seem to go through a lot of water, I can add some water and get humidity to about 35-45% but, before the day is over it's down in the twenty's again and I need to add more water. I am going to incorporate a tube into the water bowl before lock down so I don't have to lift the lid. I guess it's the fan causing the water to dissipate so quickly. Yes No? Otherwise, everything is still good(knock on wood).

Locking down today for my last October babies, then have 10 lavender orpingtons and 5 mixes due next Tuesday. I need votes for what to set next!
Seramas- these are local so no shipping issues
Copper marans- local
Bantam mix- great variety pack with silkies, serama a, polish and more, but these are shipped.

I would vote for the seramas. No shipping would be too tempting lol Although the bantam mix would be so fun to see what you end up with. Or you could do what I'd do and set seramas, marans, AND the bantam mix

I vote for Copper Marans because they are local. Otherwise, I would have voted for the Bantam mix.
If someone wants hatching eggs, PM me.
I will have CL x Red Star and CL X RIR and CL x CL eggs for next 2-3 weeks. CL x CL are pullet eggs though.
The CL x Red Star eggs may hatch possible green/olive eggers
