November Hatch-A-Long (2014)

Yay! I'll let it stew a bit.

There may be a couple others from the darker eggs. I had thought that I had managed to miss drying a couple and dabbed the clear fluid (water? albumin?), then this one continued to seep - letting it dry on there is when it hardened and turned slightly yellow. Hopefully, if there is another, I can identify it before it's too late!
You can put it in a separate little tupperware container so that it does not contaminate the other eggs if it is rotten. I did that with my last lonely Legbar egg before I finally decided to toss it. It did not explode, but he embryo had died and ti was starting to rot.

You've also got to look at it the other way. When a baby is born it isn't a day old until it hits 24 hours after it's born. Then it's still a day old until it hits 48. As with your birthday, once you hit your bday, you don't turn 2 after the day of your birthday. I think that's where the ones who subscribe to the theory you don't count the set day as day one are coming from. It's not a day until it hits 24 hours....then you are still in day one until you hit 48 hours. It makes sense to me...I'm going with it.....lol

That's a good point too. Eek. I guess everyone does everything differently. Even how to count to hatch day
gig.gif
Well I go by the other way personally but that's because I'd never heard to not count the first day before. As long as it ends in lots of fluffballs I suppose it doesn't really matter

Good idea! I have a questionable egg in my bator right now. I think I'm going to do that to be on the safe side. Thanks for the idea

Morning all. Great news... We had our first hatched chick this morning.
1f604.png

This little guy is 1 of 2 eggs we let our young broody bantam sit on. (Not her eggs) Not the greatest pic because I didn't want to hassle mama or the baby's. Still waiting on chick #2 to make an appearance but I can hear chirps so I assume it won't be too long.

Dad is a barred rock and mom can either be barred rock, RIR, buff Orp or blue Langshan. I know it's not the greatest pic but does anyone have any guesses?

Anyways I'm pretty excited and I know my 6yr old daughter is going to go crazy. Great start to my day. Have a good day everyone.

Brian

I don't have any guesses but SOOO cute! Congrats!

Wow that's a nice incubator! I'd love to have one with that kind of capacity but I'm not certain I could sell that many chicks. When I have more land I may give it a try lol if they don't sell I would have one happy freezer and crockpot

Alright, someone asked so here are pics! 10 Lavender Orpingtons and 5 un-cream legbar

The lavenders first:

And my cream legbars that are doing really good impersonations of silkies:

They're beautiful! I love your legbar/silkie impersonators lol I agree that they're doing a great impersonation

That's about my take on it right now...lol I don't care what you call it, I'm so happy. Our first attempt at hatching for homeschool back in September was a letdown, so this has been wonderful! (No matter what day it's considered. lol)

very happy for you

I don't homeschool (although I'm considering it after hearing all the things my kids are being taught in school that I don't agree with, but that's a different can of worms) but my first hatch was a fun experiment that I was doing with my kids to teach them about life cycles and where our food comes from. I don't buy store bought meat anymore. It was a total letdown too. We got 2 beautiful chicks out of it but that's not great odds when you start with 26 eggs. I'm hoping for better luck next round with chickens. Lockdown is tomorrow morning for the first batch! Ummm going by my method of counting lol

Oh hi I set all my eggs in the incubator and I have candled them tonight I had to remove one its was empty. However I am panicking becose I have twins in two eggs. Not even double Yolk non of my eggs are double Yolker. In my last lot was a twin as well and they didn't hatch. Was perfectly formed but yolk didn't assorb in the tummy. Both dead. :/Any advise what can I do for them to survive? :)

So, here's a little collage of our first 9 hatchers. (#10 just put in his appearance in the bator.) So far so good. My malpositioned hatcher is doing wonderful. I do have one that managed to chip it's bottom beak on something (I believe one of the thermometer,) and has a bit of blood still in its beak, but seems to be pretty spunky despite that. My 9th born, the runt so far has been picked on by someone (probably my bully, ya, I have one) and has a boo boo on top of his head, but he seems to be doing well too.

I have two more that have made small pips and 4 that haven't done anything. We don't start day 21 until 4 tonight, so there's still time for everyone to be on time...lol
Oh Amy, they're beautiful. Grats on your hatch. :) (Love the collage!)

Holy fudgesticks! What an incubator!

We have hatched! Only of of the two hatched, but I hadn't seen movement from one in several days so I wasn't thinking it would. Started to pip yesterday and hatched about 4:30 this am. Me and my daughte (five) got to see most of it. It is just SO TINY... Now I feel like I've never had chicks before (always gotten them in the mail or TSC).

I've left him/her in the bator for now... trying to decide when to take him out (I don't know why I keep saying he...), and if/when to get the other chicks (two ) that are about a week old to help keep him company....

HELP!!!!

I am glad your little peeper made an appearance before work. I was worried you'd miss it.

As far as integrating, I'd be nervous. My two hatched only 12 hours apart or something ( I don't know. I've had so little sleep I've lost track of what happened when) but they still peck at each other incessantly. One will wait until the other dozes off and then peck it awake. Or they'll both fall asleep and one will start chirping, wake the other one up and the woken one will peck at the cheeping one to complain. It seems to have calmed down a bit since I put them in the brooder. They found the food and water already so they've got something to do and more space than the tiny egg crib they were in before.

I've got so much work to do today but I'll try to get some pics of mine at some point. Out of nine eggs, only seven were fertile, and only two hatched. But I have living chicks this time (Which I wouldn't have had if I hadn't intervened) and I am SO HAPPY. Thank goodnesss... WHEW! The downside is they're both female, so they go to my friend, Jenny. LIVING CHICKS, YAY!
wee.gif

Also while I was moving the chicks last night, I spread out the remaining eggs, and... I had a look at them.

They're not looking so good either.

I don't know why I lose so many perfectly good looking eggs at lockdown. It's very frustrating. I appear to have maybe four living ones, they're iffy. Actually all the others are iffy too. BAH! If they're alive they should start tonight or tomorrow. I set these eggs earlier in the day than the others so maybe they'll have the good sense to hatch in the day time and not all hours of the night like this first group.

I will never never never set eggs two days apart again. The first batch had me bite my nails down to nubs. With the second it will probably be down to the bone. Or I might pull all my hair out. Why didn't anyone tell me how horrible it is to hatch eggs?! It's like three weeks of anxiety and work, two solid nights of agony and then a couple of hours of cuteness afterwards. And then you have to raise and feed the noisy little things.

LOL I hope you have good luck on this go round too, (no matter what day is 21....lol) We too had two hatchers out of the 17 at lock down last time, but the second hatcher (hatched day 24 by my calc-25 by yours) didn't make it, so we've had a loner for the last couple months.
