Novice chicken mom looking for info on breeds

Hi there! I’m new to this site and look forward to learning more about being a good chicken mom.
I currently have a Rhode Island Red and a bantam. Sadly our other Rhode Island Red was eaten by a bear.
We have just upgraded our coop to be more secure and are looking to add 6-8 new girls.
I’m considering Plymouth Barred Rocks and Speckled Sussex. I’m wanting friendly, pretty hens that will produce brown eggs. I love to interact with them, so not looking for bullies.
Appreciate any advice on these breeds living together or other suggestions.

Welcome to BYC! I found that Orpingtons (I have always had Buff), and Wyandottes have always been tame for me. They also do well in cooler weather, as they are on the fluffy side! Plymouth Barred Rocks are a great choice and I also have a speckled sussex who is always close to me and very curious. Good luck with your new flock!

So glad you joined our community Julie. Speckled Sussex are so pretty! I think eventually you'll find there's no particular breed that's always sweet, there's the potential to bully from any and all. Good luck with your search.

Welcome! I agree with @buffyfluffy17 that my Orpingtons are the friendliest of my 7 breeds.
I have Lavender, blue, and buff. While I love my lavenders to the moon and back - don't waste your money on them ONLY for their 'purple' color. They're grey birds! If you want them, get them for their smart, sweet natures.

I have a momma bear that lives nearby. I have poultry netting powered with a 10,000 volt charger and have never had any issues with the bear. I highly recommend adding hot wires to your defense system.
