I just spent a bit of time reading through some posts on here, and I know im being paranoid, but I can't help it! I do all of the necessaries, and then quite a bit more. Some say im obsessed with my chickens, and id have to agree. Im just so worried that something terrible is going to happen and its no fun. I don't want to lose any of my birds, and I know its inevitable, im just a little crazy.

Just wanted to share with some like minded chicken "nerds"

I think I know how you feel! When my black copper marans pullet suddenly died for no reason, no symptoms, nothing - now I always find myself checking on the chickens every hour that I'm home! It's driving me nuts!

If you are new to this site and read all of these disease/ illness concerns you can get quite scared, I know I did . Just try to learn what to look for, just like human medical disease, if you read about it you have it! Most chickens will do fine, you must have a safe coop, real safe and lock the coop door at night, best way to keep your hens alive and safe. give them clean food and water always and keep them in a stress free environment and they should do fine. If you ever see blood on a hen separate her asap, chickens will peck at blood spots and can cause quite a mess and even kill a hen, other than that chickens are fun and easy to care for. and yes i worry all the time too because my girls are the best! I just love them

I watch my chickens so I can notice if anything is off. When I started I stayed out of the emergency illness section. I have since read it. I know what to look for. I just enjoy my chickens and I did have to cull one of my hens for a staph infection in her foot and leg. I was ready it still hurts to loss a chicken but I know that as long as they are with me they had a great life with plenty of free range time yummy treats and sunshine.

I worry about my chicken and all the 'what if's'. What I find surprising is each chicken is so different and losing them is also so different. There is no way to prepare. You won't know how you react until it happens and even then it's still different every time. The ones that bother me most are the ones I feel responsible for - I overlooked something or didn't notice or didn't have a way to help. So I do try and stay on top of things and keep a close watch on them.

I definitely do a very thorough check of my chickens every day, especially the ones that let me hold them, which is quite a good portion of them. I inspect their feet and legs, peel feathers back to check their skin, use diatamatious earth in their coop to keep mites down and clean their coop and run 2x a week. They have TONS of room to roam, perches to jump around on, lots of extra veggies and other treats and an almost obsessive amount of love and "petsies". They even fly into my arms when I open the door to the run. I love them and they love me, which is probably why I worry about them so much. Just bought a chicken health book as well, to try to know better what to look for and what to do better.

I am not new to caring for animals, horses, dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, mice and now chickens, I just have not lost any anomals, other than to old age, so that is a big reason why I worry.
