Hi all. I've been enjoying the content of BYC since getting chickens 3 years ago, but now I'm officially on the inside!
We live on a couple of acres in north Texas where we have intermittent fantasies of homesteading, but are really glad there's a grocery store down the road. Our first step in that direction was a few conversations about getting chickens. My husband remembers those conversations ending rather solidly in the not-quite-ready camp. I'm not so sure... Not long after, a frustrating day at home with the children resulted in a desperate trip to the feed store, and that evening my husband was greeted by the sweet sound of cheeping emanating from our bathroom. Chicken therapy?
He forgave me. He's a good guy.
We currently have 13:
A 3 yr old RIR (who has either stopped laying, only lays in the yard, or eats the eggs?), three Ameraucanas, a home-born mix, red sex-link, Welsummer, Cochin, Brown leghorn, 3 Silkies and a Jersey Giant.
I finally joined because my leghorn's shanks are both swollen and I was hoping someone could offer some advice. I posted the question with pictures in the emergency section a couple of weeks ago. She seems to be getting worse and I'm not sure what to do for her. If anyone has any ideas I would so appreciate it!
