I wasn't sure where to put this but here it is.
I recently took out a documentary type movie from the Pub. Lib. called "Egg laying 101" or something like that. It was good for what it said but not good for what it didn't. It showed an egg factory that was clean and birds that were healthy and all the good stuff.
What it didn't address was maintenance of the health of these birds and the disposal of expended birds. It mentioned nothing of the antibiotics fed to birds to ward off disease. Mind you birds in these places get fed antibiotics whether they need them or not. Please keep in mind you are what they eat.
Second not all egg farms are not clean and neat. Nor are they inspected on a regular basis state to state.
Third here in my area Blooms egg farm could be smelled miles before you got to it.

Todays paper mentions a Documentary called "Food Inc". I haven't seen it yet but we should all look it up.

Finally it's important to educate your family and friends and anyone who will listen about the healthy or unhealthy affects of our food that comes from farms. Commercial or otherwise. A friend recently told my DW that her doctor told her the reason her DD was going through puberty so early, 10yrs or so, was because of the hormones in the milk. She is now giving her Soy milk.

Be respectful in relaying this information and if a person resists your info let it drop.

Love ya all Rancher

God lord that IS scary!

I dont often 'do' documentaries because I am sqeamish and you just dont know whats coming on the screen next but I also hate to be an ostrich with its head in the sand.

Thanks for the great info!

Thanks for the info. I will look it up. This is the one subject that gets me on my soap box faster than anything. If the general public knew truely what they are eating then I don't think the family farms would have much trouble making a living off the farm.

They would be much better served finding some local real milk.

Maybe it's just me-but I'd rather drink something natural (and milk, strait from an udder, is about as natural as you can get) than some recently invented processed milk-like liquid that comes from a vegetable.

I totally agree!!! Right now we're limited to fresh eggs, but the store bought eggs are just DISGUSTING!!! Last year when my chickens stopped laying for a molt I just didn't have any eggs in the house, there was NO WAY I was gonna buy them from the store.

I think the important thing is the fact that it's not just how the animals are treated, it's how their mistreatment affects the quality of the food. Someone who has never eaten a farm fresh egg will never taste the richness and flavor that eggs are supposed to have, and that store eggs will NEVER have because the chickens are treated like a commodity instead of living beings God put here to give us food. I believe that our living food sources need to be respected, and I think the low quality of our meat/meat products illustrates what happens when that respect is not given.

Of course, if the general public really finds out how easy it is to raise a few chickens and how nutritionally poor their store bought food really is someone higher up will lose money, so ignorance is their paycheck.....

One day when I am rich I will have chickens, cows, pigs, sheep, and goats....I will never buy store meat ever again!!!!

No, not just you LOL
We drink it straight from the udder! Mainly because the taste is better than store bought milk and we like to eat fresh.....

KS is right, soy is an estrogenic. When DD was young I always bought the organic milk. I was giving her so much milk and didn't want to be pumping her full of hormones. Another reason (one of the main reasons really) girls in the US are going through puberty so early is that many are seriously overweight. Once a girl reaches appx 100 lbs she often will begin to enter puberty no matter what age she is. Yet another reason to eat healthy and exercise.

I agree that we all should know about our commercial animal production practices, not just for chickens but other meat sources too. It's a big eye opener.

I cannot imagine why anyone would use soy milk unless they were lactose intolerant or a vegan. Legumes, of which soy is one, can produce hormones that mimic mammalian reproductive hormones. One year a friend of mine had to induce labor in just about all of her goats because the hormones in the legume hay that particular year had sufficient hormones in it that natural labor was suppressed. If the mother is worried about BST, it is not hard to find milk that doesn't have any in it. And there are sources of hormones in the environment that have nothing to do with food.

Now I may have misspoke about the soy milk, but I'll recheck. As for straight from the udder keep in mind that you can Pastuerize your own milk by boiling it. Do some research as to why they pasteurize things such as milk and cider. I find it strange that some missed everything except the soy milk and I expect will never bother with the movies. Though "Food Inc." is in book form.
