Now pay attention.

You must understand that there was a disease, polio, I believe that was passed from cows milk to humans and that is why milk is pasteurized. Pastuerization from pasteur, Louis Pasteur. Straight from the udder is not necessarily safe.

You're not even close. It is TB (tuberculosis) that is passed from animal to human in milk. Also diphtheria and brucelosis can be passed this way. Brucelosis can be passed from deer to cows to humans, which is why cows are supposed to be vaccinated for it.

Oh, and Jonas Saulk created the vaccination for polio.

If you are worried about the hormones in milk, most grocery stores (at least where I am) sell hormone free milk. and it isn't just in the milk, but also in the meat and other animal products.

In Vermont you would not have a hard time finding hormone free milk in any grocery. I don't think anyone uses growth hormone here anymore. Also, it is quite legal to purchase raw milk from dairies though most are limited on how much they can sell per day.

I don't even think I could even find milk with hormones in it here in WA.

But, we do grow all our own beef and pork. Gonna start growing our own poultry in the spring. All our fish is wild caught (by my husband, hehe), and we have an awesome garden. We plan on getting a milk cow when our kiddoes are a bit bigger and can help a bit with the farm chores. Or I talk my FIL into moving in with us, whichever comes first. Though he wants goats. Maybe both.

I should have done some research first, I'll admit it, but my original intent was to get a conversation going about organic and non hormomal milk. Which it seems I have.
I do however wash my eggs in a soap/bleach solution before they go in the carton. Whether it's necessary or not I do it cause I want to and it makes me feel better.
As for those who responded I don't know milk and this is the first year with chickens and I'm learning alot, but that's what this site is about, am I right? I'm not offended to be corrected cause I believe you all have good motives.
As for the health of our food, it would be a bad thing to see the pendulium swing the other way, from working to prevent disease to going back the way things were.

Oh and dont' forget to wash your hands. Love ya

You do realize that the egg shells are porous, and when you wash with bleach and such it can seep into your eggs. If you need to wash, I would recommend plain water only, as you probably do not want bleach in your food.

Is she aware that soy is an phytoestrogen containing food source? That some women use to ease the symptoms of menopause?

They would be much better served finding some local real milk.

Maybe it's just me-but I'd rather drink something natural (and milk, strait from an udder, is about as natural as you can get) than some recently invented processed milk-like liquid that comes from a vegetable.

Yes, the local preacher's son has developed breasts from the hormones in the milk he was drinking. He had to be pulled off "regular" milk and now only gets organic and hormone free milk.

And I agree, try to find farm-fresh milk (either pasteurized or unpasteurized as you please) because if you research it further, you'll learn that soy is not a good substitute. If you live in a rural area, you might want to consider getting a milk goat or a Jersey. It's really wonderful having your own fresh milk. If you can't get a goat or cow because you don't have the time/room/whatever, try to buy shares in a cow or goat. Cow/goat share programs are a good alternative and you get the benefits of the milk without all the work

No, not just you LOL
We drink it straight from the udder! Mainly because the taste is better than store bought milk and we like to eat fresh.....

Ewwwwwww........ I thought it was only me that did that

Actually, if you do a little digging they cannot prove that you get TB from milk...... they just used it as an example to push for the mandatory pasturization of milk. The Brucellosis is not much of a threat unless you are in the West, and diptheria is contracted from inhaling the toxin or getting it subcutaneously.

So you can safely drink unpasturized milk if the farmer adheres to good milking practices.
