Hi there! I joined BYC right on Christmas of 2008 because I received an IOU for Christmas to get chickens when the weather warmed up. I was so excited...but we never ended up getting the chickens (long story)....but now we have them (two years later)!!! I'm back with a million questions for all you experts. Its certainly been a learning experience so far (we've had them a month now), but how I've wanted a few times to have someone who really knows chickens to answer my questions or just share in my insanity.

A little about me, I'm mom of two boys (6 and 7 yrs old) and been married for ten years. I'm a writer, wanna be farmer, and a homeschool mom. My hubby is a sheriff's deputy. We live on 13 acres, sharing a house with my parents while we all save money to get a "real farm" together. (We live within city limits and have WAY too many restrictions here as far as what we can do). I like the outdoors, working hard, baking and cooking from scratch, am learning to sew...but mostly like to hang with my peeps!

We have six hens (all mixed up breeds we got from a friend) who have just started to lay, a stray rooster who we found in our ditch in a sleet storm half dead (who lived in our house for a week while he recovered) 8 two week old reds (we got from TSC after our first hatch in our homemade incubator didn't work) and a little lone I-don't-know-what-it-is chick who we took in from a friend (the only one to hatch from her incubator of 40 mixed eggs). We thought he would integrate with our other chicks (they are the same age but half the size) but our chicks were big bullies so we pulled the little baby out and he's got his own brooder now. Might go find a couple more chicks more his size so he has buddies??

We also have a dozen Buff Orp eggs and a dozen Khaki Campbells incubating right now (second try on the incubator after some tweaking) that should hatch 5/5 and 5/12. Crossing our fingers for better luck this time!

Well, that's enough about me. So glad to be here and looking forward to getting to know other people who are chicken crazy like myself!

Two seperate times I had a lone chick due to a poor hatch. The first time the chick was peeping loudly and wouldn't stop, so I went a quickly got little buddies for it. The second time it happened I put in little stuffed animals and the chick seemed fine, almost like she was enjoying herself! About 2 weeks later I added other chicks in with her and she did just fine with them to.

Good luck with your next hatch!!!

Welcome to BYC. I am happy for you that you got your chickens after such a long wait.
