If you wanted to let the owner know you can always call your county's animal shelter and ask if anyone is missing a white Shepard and tell them that you were forced to put down a stray one killing livestock should they receive any calls. That or the normal SSS
I'd just bury it and forget it. Although you might write up a bill for damages to livestock and keep it handy in case someone comes knocking looking for their dog.

YOUR A WOMAN???? You pulled out a 30.06 and took care of a predator like that, without your husband around??? I am so impressed! I am sending my wife up for some lessons from you!
Please don't take this as being disrespectful. I am not joking about it..I am totally impressed with your taking the bull by the horns and doing what you thought had to be done.
I still feel like you did the right thing but it does stink. I totally love dogs but I love chickens as well. I will do everything I can to keep from killing one but if it was an accident like in your case, I wouldn't sweat it. I can tell from your post that you're not happy with what happened. It was probably a stray and its probably best that it happened. I had much rather it be put out of his misery than to starve to death or have it kill all of your birds trying to survive. Just bury it properly and forget about it.
I agree with the SSS after dealing with some crazy neighbors recently I will never ever tell someone to please keep their pet out of my yard again.
Poof thats all that will happen here. And when I get the electric fence up it will be ZAP!!!
hm. well you did the right thing. Even if that dog did belong to somebody and even if you returned him home..He knew where some free food was and he would have probably just kept on comin' back.

LOL. Yes, I'm a woman. The 30.06 has an excellent scope, and no one messes with my babies. We live out in the middle of NOWHERE and having rifle skills is a must, as my husband works long hours.
I wouldn't recommend a 30.06 for a beginner. I actually prefer the .22 but the scope is off it and open sights just wastes bullets. The 30.06 kicks like a mule, but it gets the job done.
Thanks, I'm not insulted. My husband has taught me well.
So far, there's been no one up looking for a dog. The dog officer hasn't been around in a month or so, I'll run it past him when I see him again.
Open sites are not useless. I have hit targets at 300 meters, it is just harder. LOL Sorry you had to do kill the dog but you have a right to protect your livestock. Good on ya for doing what had to be done!
