Now what?!?!

We woke up to a dead pullet in the coop. She was fine last night. Nothing externally wrong (no wounds, pecking or anything of the like), just looks like she died and fell off the roost. She was roughly about 16 weeks old.

A few weeks ago we had one chicken show signs of cocci, so all were treated. Everyone has seemed fine, no more bloody poo from anyone.

Now we've been dealing with a broken toe and bumblefoot in another of the pullets.

So what happened to Sarah? Do I have some other disease going through my new flock? (we lost the last of our older flock this winter/very early spring and have started a new one this spring.


Ugh! So what do I do??? Are we going to wake up to more dead chickens?

There's really no way to know without an autopsy. Often you can have one done by a state vet for free or cheap, but often you have to be prepared, know how they want the body handled, etc. If the rest aren't sick, I would tend to assume she just had something wrong internally. There are some links in the sticky at the top of this forum (the emergencies forum) that might help -- though probably not this time, being a Sunday.

No, it was cocci after all.

Upon further inspection of the coop, I found some goopy, bloody poop up on the high area or our coop (there is a "shelf" so to speak...much wider than a shelf as it is about 2 feet wide, hubby originally built it to store the extra feed and bedding, but we've now let them have access to that area as well). So I am now treating again with corrid. I treated the first time for 5 days. Everyone looked like they were quite healthy by then.

Should I have treated longer? Did it most likely not go away, or can it come back since it is something in the ground? I'm guessing I should try to treat this time around for 7 days (I was told the treatment time was 5-7 days the last time I had to treat)?
