NPIP certification

I know this is the wrong place for this but I wasn't sure where to put it. I am going to contact the Ag. extension and get NPIP certified after the first of the year. Is there anything I should know? What should I do to prepare for their visit?

They will test every bird on your place the first time so have them where they are easily picked up. You know so you don't have to spend time running them down. Sometimes I have them in Cages and then as they are tested release them back to the coop. I always just tidy my place up a bit but they always say I have some of the cleanest chicken coops they go to test. I am always surprised. Surprised cause I try to make everything disease free but I don't knock myself out. Anyway really nothing to it getting NPIP tested unless you have 100 breeding chickens.. They usually don't test chicks and juvies.

Nothing you need to do to prepare really. You should be set up so each bird can be caught, tested and released where you won't be catching the same bird (if yours look alike). Ah, Bamachicken, you beat to it.

I had a long talk with the guy out of Nashville a coupla weeks ago. He was very friendly and helpful. Just call the Memphis guy up and ask him any questions you can think of. He should be happy to answer!

Are you gonna get tested just for Salmonella, or are you going to add additional tests? I'm thinking of testing for mycoplasma -- but I'm not sure I want to know!

Amazon, Interesting you mentioned Mycoplasma. My NPIP testing folks mentioned that Mycoplasma was the major flock problem they have faced.

If I only have a handfull of birds is it worth the certification? I do not know much and am curious what the minimum amount of birds owned should be for testing?

If you're going to sell eggs or chickens, in most states it's required.

I want it because I will not be able to cross state lines if I decide to show my birds that is why I am getting certified.

I am curious.....is there a fee for this and how do I contact them in NC? I am going to sell eggs and I would feel much better having this test. Thanks for telling us about it!
