My thoughts are this. (not be cranky)

I'm very new to chickens and such. And this forum also.

I read alot of posts.
Alot for my learning and to see if my questions are the same.
I don't reply to much I read alot.
Wouldn't want to offend someone just because I read. So why tell alot have read. But no experince.

There were many reasons it was removed, but really, the main reason was that it was a resource hog on the forum. We try to run the site on a shoestring budget and at the beginning of last Spring we saw a huge spike in visits to the forum. We did some server upgrades but still there were still a lot of pending issues if we didn't take other action.

I consulted one of the developers of this software and he made some tweaks. He pointed out that the pageview counter was one of the biggest resource hogs, so we opted to remove it. I really wanted to keep it, but part of the responsibility of keeping a site going with millions of pageviews a month is to make hard choices to ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible with the resources available.

We may add it in the future, but it won't be until we know we've got a lot of headroom to play with. For example, when we added the dynamic link to each member's "My Page" that shot our server loads through the roof during peak usage. It is amazing how little thinks can make a huge difference on such a busy site!

I agree with Redoak. I think it is very easy to say that some people need to.....It could just as easily be said that you the reader could post that you dont understand the question. If I were to vote, I would vote nay. I belong to another type forum and it has this feature. It is not nice to visit it and see your post has been read 400 times but you only have one reply. Are you trying to tell me that 400 people do not understand? Or is it some other reason.

And FREE to access! Many features could be added but then there could be the reality of having to charge a membership fee if the BYC store couldn't do enough sales to cover the cost.

Personally I think Nifty has taken the right approach in keeping the overhead down.

Well I certainly stirred the pot with that one didn't I. It was not my intention surely, and I can definitely understand the resource hog part.... It just means we need to get more income for the site.

Whats the rules on members donating funds for monthly upkeep. Is it allowed by tax laws? Could you imaging if every member donated a single dollar?

I've never been a fan of the "donation" model. This is why we always try to find other ways to allow the members to support the forum, the two biggest being the BYC Sponsors and the BYC Store. If you really want to show your support of the site, contact a couple sponsors and let them know you saw them on BYC and that you appreciate their support of the site!
