I know this post is old, but I see it was from December 31st and can't help but wonder what heat supply you used? I just lost a batch of 5 chicks (2-days old) because the Brinsea heat plate didn't provide enough heat for the ambient temps I was keeping the chicks in. I think they got chilled wouldn't come out enough to eat and drink.yea it isn't the bator. I sterilize bators with colloidal silver, kills all bacteria and viruses. I thought #4 was gonna die but it's hanging in there..
The heat plate was plenty fine in spring and summer the previous year, but believe now that day-old chicks in winter need more than just the heat plate unless they are kept indoors in a well heated house (mine were in an insulated garage, and the outdoor brooders with heat lamps were plenty warm).
