The other day I posted something about the planes at New York running out of fuel... I had to get some feeds off the liveATC archives (heard of it? I found the website a while ago). I just thought it cute how the pilots are all looking out for each other, especially Jetblue 826. They were all going out of their way to let the guy with no fuel through, even though they were running short themselves.

Jetblue 826 also referred to the controller as "my friend!". The poor man was sounding extremely stressed, I would've like to work with a guy like Jetblue 826 that day.

Unfortunately they only put JUST enough fuel to make the trip. It's VERY heavy stuff and for each gallon added the fuel efficiency drops, costing the airline money. So if there's any kind of delay, any bad weather... well it leaves the pilot in the lurch, and dozens of passengers too. Those fliers are AWESOME at what they do, managing the flight obviously, but also being able to stay cool under that kind of pressure with all those lives depending on them. They've definitely got my respect... even if I haven't flown for 15 years... ear and money mostly, but also I've no desire to be groped by some pervert and no way to know if your searcher likes men or women so... yeah. We drive. But still all the respect in the world for pilots. AND a whole heck of a lot for the crew as well, since upon the first indication of trouble the cabin locks shut they're the ones who have to deal with it should any 'bad guys' get aboard. They also get the screaming babies, the drunken morons, the screeching wives, the vomit bags... *shudder* could not pay me enough... ever to do either job.

Yeah, it's sad, isn't it?

I was just thinking, this was a senario terribly similar to the one that Avianca 052 crashed in... they made an Investigations episode about them, the weather in New York was terrible, and they had to hold for hours; they finally got a slot to land, and ran out of fuel.

But yeah, enormous respect, they do a terrific job

I've always wondered what goes on behind the cockpit doors... guess that's why I watch so much of the show
