The world health organization states that the number one role of an RN is to be a patient advocate closely followed by patient educator. My experience in that role is largely what led to me hoping I could find similar care for my chickens from a vet, so I am very pleased to hear that education about preventative care is such a large part of what you all do!

Unfortunately, especially in exotic and farm animal medicine, almost all of the problems with patients you see stem from husbandry issues... Inadequate diet leading to nutritional deficiencies, insufficient heat, exercise, habitat, etc.

The patient advocate followed by patient educator feels really close to what I feel the role of a vet is, in many cases.

I agree ...a lot of the problems come from people not knowing how to take care of animals ..
Most chickens know what to do for themselves ..naturally . ..Though they do have certain problems they get as they age .. with their reproductive systems ..And there are alot of NEw Chicken owners out there this year ..Hatcheries couldnt keep up

That’s why I felt so fortunate that the 5 silkies I just got were available, as well as the 3 EEs I’ll be getting in September!

Ever since I began looking into finding a vet for my birds BEFORE I need one, I’ve been thinking about how great it would be if there were new backyard chicken owner “parenting” courses similar to ones available for new parents (ya know, the ones that teach you how to warm a bottle, change a diaper, support an infants head, etc). Maybe there are those available in some areas?

Wondering how someone such as myself could start one, too? I mean, we’re into teach such a course (day at my local community center), I wonder where to begin in finding accurate information l - like, not anecdotal evidence or stuff I googled or read about? Just not sure about how to responsibly go about beginning such a thing.

For example, I am confident in my knowledge about setting up a brooder and the appropriate temperature for it, but that doesn’t make me qualified to formally teach others about it. Would love any ideas about where I could go to learn about how I could start such a project, and one day offer a free “course” in backyard chicken keeping!
