OATS? A local farmer sells cracked corn and also oats. Can I feed these oats to my 6 month old chickens. I am assuming these oats are unprocessed. I do mix old fashioned uncooked oatmeal with dried mealy worms (trying to stretch these expensive mealy worm treats a bit) to give them a treat. Any suggestions would be most helpful. TXS in advance.

Hello and welcome to BYC!

Oats are a wonderful treat for chickens and yes they can eat them unprocessed. Lots of healthy nutrients in Oats. Cracked corn is fine as a treat but definitely feed that sparingly. Especially in the summer time when it can cause the birds to produce more heat in their bodies. Corn is a great wintertime treat.

Just make sure all treats and goodies only take up 10% of the chicken's diet. The rest of the diet needs to be chocked full of nutrients from vitamin enriched feeds and extra calcium so the hens can put on a hard shell.

Enjoy your birds! :)

Yep you can also make oatmeal my chickens love it

My chickens contracted some kind of enfluenza crap last summer when it got hot & dry & that good ole Ks hot wind hit. I've lost 6 chickens including 1 rooster. I finally got it clearned up til now & have a couple with symptoms again! At my wits end!!! Any suggestions?
