I have an Oberhasli that I need to refresh and am not sure that I can find another Oberhasli in my area to breed her with. I was wondering if I could breed her to a Boer billy and still get some good milking or meat goats from this mix? I do want to raise Boers in the future and my husband says I can only have one buck. I was thinking a Nubian to refresh her with, but once I get my Boers that will be the only buck I will have

Well I am not an expert by any means but Oberhaslis weigh around 120 lbs, and boers weigh around 250 lbs. Wouldnt it cause birthing problems for an oberhasli doe to give birth to a part boer kid, since they're so much bigger?

I don't really think that the size of the buck is really the issue, its the size of the kids he produces. A boer kid can easily weigh 12 lbs. An oberhasli kid weighs around 8 lbs. It may not sound it, but 4 lbs can really make a difference. It really is a gamble, but i would hate to see your doe pass away from birthing problems. If you are having trouble finding a buck it really isn't worth putting your goats life on the line. I would see if i could maybe find a nubian buck? They are very common milk goats, and if you wanted to milk the kids in the future, would be a better option than a boer.
