So I just wanted to share a few updates. I had 15 chicks and 6 guineas to start. They are a little over 13 weeks old. A few nights ago I decided that my guineas were being so mean to my girls I was gonna teach them a lesson and throw them out of the coop for the night. I left the run area open to them if they wanted to go in there. The first night was all good. My girls came out happy and the coop was about 1/2 as messy without them in there. 2nd night not so good. 4am we hear those guineas squawking like crazy. I jump up, stub my toe on the end of the bed to look out the ONE window we have a view of the coop at and I see a fox carrying one of my guineas off. My husband and I went out there and sat for about hour with our .22's to see if it would come back but it must have been full. I thought I saw a fur fox hat in my future. Decided that wasn't prob the best idea cuz them dumb guineas lay on the ground at night. I guess I assumed they would roost in the trees. So for now I am keeping them all together but I am afraid come winter the guineas will have to go. I know they don't like to be cooped up and they will be even meaner! Guess we will have a guinea feed this hunting season.
I have 5 Rhode Island Reds. I feel so bad for them. They are like red headed step children (no offense to red heads, love em) ALL of the other chicks n guineas are SOOOOOOOOO mean to them. They don't let them eat, they are the last to get into the coop at night. They all share the bottom roost. I don't know what it is but they ALL hate the RIR's?? Why??
Last night I came across an app on my IPhone with chicken calls. It was free so I thought WTH. I testing the different calls and am pretty sure I am going to be able to become fluent in chicken language. Some of the calls they would come running to me. Others they would take off running. I have no roosters but when I played they stood still and their lil heads popped up and were looking all around. It was so funny!
I'm loving that I went with my sand floor in the coop. It is so easy. Like emptying a cat litter box each day. Takes me about 5 min and then once a week or so I scrub down the walls. My garden is gonna love it too cuz it is way to dense and it is gonna love some sand. I love the guineas cuz they are lil watch dogs but they are kind of mean. I am anxious for eggs but am wondering how I am gonna feel about it this winter when I have to make my way through 3 feet of snow and -20 temps!
