Odd behavior!?

Why are my chickens doing this? We let them roam freely in the yard for a few hours as much as possible. Well they did this today? Anyone have any insights? Thank you in advance!

Are they dust bathing? That's the only thing I can think of. If they're dust bathing, it's perfectly normal and a very healthy and necessary behavior.

That's what my husband and I thought .. but they were crouched down and huddled all together.. almost as if about to lay an egg? But I'm semi-new to the chicken world! So I'm not sure.

Did you notice them breaking up the soil with their beaks and then tossing the dirt all over themselves? Mine like to do it in a group as well.
