Odd egg shells

Recently one of our hens started laying eggs with rough, porous, pumice-like texture shells which also seem lighter in weight than our other eggs. Does anyone know what causes this? Are they edible? (The hen is aprox. 3 years old and behaves normally... I know she's an older bird but we haven't encountered this problem in any of our other older birds.)

Sounds like a little extra calcium. Nothing to worry about, and they are edible.
