odd eggvidence, whats doing it?

Always during the day when im out of town for a while. Mi have two hens sitting on eggs. And I free range my chickens. I come home and find an egg sitting 1 foot out of the nest. Theres a 1" inch round hole in the egg and tge contents are gone, the egg is dry and clean inside like it was licked dry. ?.. im starting to think momma got hungry. But uf a chicken did it, would there be mess in the egg and on chickens face? I live in centerville texas. Thanks for your responses.

Sounds like a predator got to your eggs. Sorry to hear about that.

I'd think maybe a possum or a skunk. I found some eggs a possum got into and it took just a bit of the egg off. I don't think chickens would be that neat or patient to leave just a small hole. If I find a broken egg they will usually eat the shell too. Or at least someone is running around with it.

I'd think pred too.

its been almost 2 months; but to add conclusion...... yup, the hen was doing it.
