Odd question...but does your duck like water and swimming?

Hi,

I know everyone might expect all ducks to love water equally...I certainly did.

My White Campbell loves water...but she really isn't a fan of swimming.
When swimming she just tollerates it and floats around...usually when the bath is too deep of I have nudged her into the deep area of the pond.
But she will always aim for water that is shallow enough to stand in...then she's a very happy duck and sploshed around for hours.
It wasn't until she was over 4 weeks old before she even put her head completely under and snuffled for food.

I got a two week old Runner a few days ago...and saying she loves water is an understatement.
On her second bath, probably the second time she's ever seen water other than drinking water in a little bowl, she wasn't just snuffling for food with her head under...but she was swimming...proper swimming under water, and couldn't get enough. Swimming in circles like there was no tomorrow letting out those happy cheaps they make.
This is in almost complete contrast to my Campbell.

Do you ducks like water and swimming?

We bought some Runners at an auction that are fully grown and they verys eldom come out of the water. The sleep there, and even in a hail storm they just tucked thier heads and kept paddling.

I had one duck that liked to stand in a water bowl but wasn't a fan of swimming.

She never really swam much in the pond. She just splashed around in the bowl and wouldn't let the other ducks drink out of it

My Peepers - a mixed call duck - left by his mother and raised by me - I got him bantam chicks to keep him company. Cause of the chicks, he never had a really deep dish to swim in and to this day, he will not get in to the kiddie swimming pool or any container in which he cannot touch the bottom with his feet. If I pick him up and put him in the pool, he panics when his feet do not touch - it is sadly charming. He does love the water, just shallow water. Peepers also does not think he is a duck - he is not interested in hanging with the ducks or finding a duckie girlfriend. He believes he is a chicken and he has picked a chicken to be his girlie friend.

My welsh harlequin ducklings haven't spent much time in water yet, but when I put out a seedling tray full of water for them, they jump right in and splash around in it.

My call duck on the other hand likes to flatten herself in the water and submerge under it... No swimming as I have not given them something that big and deep enough yet.. Just the seedling tray. Soon they'll have the kiddie pool to play in.

Horsefeatherz - I also had a Runner x duckling that was raised by a chicken who went ballistic every time the duckling got near water. So the Runner wouldn't have anything to do with a pool until she had duck friends and eventually discovered how cool swimming was.

All my Runners are the same, love the diving and swimming underwater (especially before mating), but I'm afraid my wading pools don't give them much room. Do they make 'lap' shaped wading pools?

Cuz I'd invest in a couple.

My Khaki Campbell and Buff mix love the water Now ! But when I first put them in they freaked out and jumped out. We used a kiddie pool which they grew to enjoy thenwhen that popped my hubby madea 4 foot x 4 foot frame out of palletts and put black liner in it and it is 15 ins deep. After building a ramp for them to get in they refused to go in it. So I manually put them in and when they realised what fun it was they now go up the ramp and spend hours in there ! And with it being 15 ins deep they have no choice but to swim which they love although we have put stones in for them to stand on if they choose. Perseverence is the key . Good Luck

That cools how everyones ducks have a different love of water.

If I leave a seed tray out and it rains that's exactly what my duck does.
She stands in it for most of the day and guards it...it's HER water. She acts like a sentry duck...we found it quite amuzing.
