Odds? Broody-Related

I think they would be okay at that age. My mama's usually aren't quite so protective at that age with theirs. It's when I have several hens woth babies that all hatched in a few days of each other that I tend to see aggression more than just flaring and growling

Also just know some mama's are more lenient than others. I had a pair I had to boot into the main coop fast because they were not tolerant of other chicks at all. And I have a hen that literally stole every baby she possibly could, to the detriment of the young chixks when the oldest were 2 and 3 weeks their senior

These are in the main coop. DH is putting a new roof on the Little Monitor Coop but hit some snags so it's not ready for broodies yet.

They aren't there yet as of closing time so I'll have to hope they still have some on Thursday morning.

OK, I'm pretty sure I can count on the broody in the box to accept the babies.

When I went to close them up and felt under her to see if she had any eggs rather than just golf balls one of the 2-week-old babies popped it's head up. I don't know how that baby got away from Mocha, but I got pecked by the broody in the box getting hold of him and then bitten by Mocha trying to return the baby to the correct mother.

God willing, I'll be able to get the WTB chicks early tomorrow morning and I think I can count on this girl to accept them.

I think this would be a good experiment to do regardless. If a broody will break this easily, I am not certain if trust her with a clutch of chicks. I've learned to only count on the ones who need to be kenneled for days before they give up the ghost.

Having that chick with her at night must have flipped her hormonal switch because she wasn't on the nest this morning and, after several hours, hasn't gone back to the nest.

For the first time in months I don't have any broodies in my boxes at all.

ONE MORE DAY!

So the 4 babies I bought -- the last two Whiting True Blues, a splash Cochin, and a Blue Cochin (I didn't want to raise just two chicks), are in the brooder instead.

On the other hand, glad you were able to get some new babies and there were a couple WTB left!
