Update at 11:42 p.m. - The first Salmon Faverolles chick has hatched out. It pipped early this morning, I think, and it took all day to break out of that shell. I'll get a pic posted of this chick when I move it from the hatching incubator to the brooder box with the white OEGB chick. I've got several more of the SFs that are pipped and I noticed another of the OEGB eggs is rockin'. The New Year's Party is apparently underway in the incubator now.

You put your right foot in. You put your right foot out. You put your right foot in and you shake it all about. You do the hokey pokey and you turn yourself around. That's what it's all about... (OEGB)

The final count from this hatch appears to be 3 OEGBs and 5 Bantam Salmon Faverolles. So far all of the OEGBs, which were from my little hen, have hatched. The SF eggs were mail order. Out of 14 eggs, 11 showed some development. Of the 11 with development 5 hatched on their own with no help. Of the 6 that didn't make it, 2 weren't fully developed and had no chance of hatching. However, 4 were fully developed. Of the 4 that didn't make it out of the shell it looks like three of them never pipped internally. I'm not sure why the last four never pipped the membrane or the shell. I thought perhaps they may have been oriented toward the bottom of the shell instead of toward the air shell. One of the ones that hatched pipped at near the bottom, but it did get out. I regret not intervening sooner.

Daughter and I did intervene on the last OEGB and I basically had to slowly pick away the shell and trim away the membrane with some very small scissors. I think the poor little thing just didn't have that last bit of energy to escape. It's membrane seemed a little tough. It's resting now in the incubator and hopefully will recover and go to the brooder tonight. I just transferred two more OEGBs at Day 18 to the hatching incubator. Next up in about a week are Welsummer eggs.

Congrats, I am glad you made it home in time for the big event. Faverolles are just the cutest chicks around. In my experience they are bright and inquisitive from the get go. I have some that are 5 weeks old and both roosters are jumping up on the side of the brooder and roosting. They both stand up and crane their necks to see what I am up to. They both are very calm and let me snuggle them. They are a wonderful breed. Enjoy!
