What is the rule of thumb for chickens per sq foot of space in a coop? I have a 8x8x8 coop. Just curious.
thanks

4 sq ft per chicken is ideal...but they can live with 2 sq ft per bird...bantams are half that space

You get the standard answer all the time. 4 sq ft per bird. Thing is? That didn't come down with Moses from Sinai.

Deduct room for roost, feeder? Waterer? Nests?

Now what size birds?

Climate? Hot and dry? Cooped up for days during loooooong, dark, snowy winters?

Those "formulas" are only a place to start, then other things begin to factor into the equation.

and you dont want to forget about the outside space...at least 10 sq ft per bird...the more room the better tough

Thanks for the info. I have a 20x50 run on the outside of coop. That should handle 12-16 chickens just fine right?
