Vel approached the dragon slowly.Alicanto could see Starholder pacing toward him, stepping off the highway and onto the sand again.
No.
The Cloudwing tried to push himself up, his chest burning with every panting, strained breath he took.
I can still fight.
Rage was coursing through his veins. Weirdly, none of it was directed at the Nightwing. He was furious with himself.
I... I'm shaking.
Furious for showing weakness. Furious for losing to the hunter.
No.
His limbs trembled as he tried to put his weight on them.
I am not weak.
His forearms gave out again as he tried to stand up, and he gasped as his chest flared when his ribs hit the ground again.
"I am not..." his breath came out strained, but the essence of a growl touched his voice.
"I am not... weak..."
He forced his legs beneath him again.
"I. Am not. Weak."
He pressed himself up, still shaking, fighting against the pain. Fury pulsing through his body.
A stream of sickly black liquid shot toward Starholders head, most of it missing and landing sticky on the sand. The Nightwing recoiled with a howl of pain and more venom splattered onto his face from the invisible enemy.
Alicanto barely had time to comprehend what happened. In a matter of horrific seconds, Starholder was dead, and the truck was lying totaled in the sand on the other side of the highway. Cars were stopped or wrecked along the road, some of the humans standing outside their vehicles, others scrambling to retrieve any others among the wreckage.
Alicanto's blurred eyes drifted back to Vel. The Rainwing was staring blankly at him. Her scales didn't shift with any emotions the Rainwing was feeling, if she was feeling them at all. For a moment, Alicanto stared back at her in shock, finally managing to stay on his feet.
"You helped me..." he rasped, his voice cracking from the lack of breath.
"Why?"

(I'm gonna go play Minecraft for like 30 mins to an hour, be back in a little while.)
Her gaze flicked over his unimpressive form, feathers jutting out oddly from his shaking body.
"Stay down, CloudWing." She warned, suddenly smacking him across the face with the tip of her wing.
The silver dragon stumbled, and Vel shoved him over, placing a talon on his throat.
She lowered her head, growling in his ear. "Stay. Down."
Blood pooled from the dragon's neck. Vel snatched his tense talon, pushing his palm against the wound. "Hold that. Don't let up, idiot," she shoved his talon back down on the wound, "you'll bleed out and die." She glanced at the disastrous freeway. "I'll be right back."
