We have a small (12 pullets, one rooster) free-ranging flock. Recently the comb one of our pullets (who had just started laying) has turned from bright red to dull, almost brown/purple. Anyone have an idea what caused this? She seems otherwise healthy and alert. Thanks!

I think it would be helpful to post a pic of the comb in question. But here's a bump. Maybe someone elso knows without a pic.

I have seen chickens' combs redden or pale before my eyes. Their level of excitement seems to be a factor. But a pale comb could also be a sign of a heavy parasite load, or a bueish comb could indicate disease. So I would take a closer look at her.
