We have a stray kitten in our garage hiding out. He or she is very pretty but absolutely a scaredy-cat.

My husband named him "Spackle", and he ran in the garage right before we left for vacation, so he's been in there with food, water, etc., and has claimed our daughter's old car seat as his bed.

Any tips on taming him or getting him to come out from hiding?

We are not even parking in the garage right now...

YEAH. "WE DON'T WANT ANOTHER CAT." RIGHT.

You can always sit out there and talk to him every night, while there's a can of food about 2 feet away from you. Leave 1/4-1/3 of the can out there when you go in; He doesn't get the whole can unless he comes out while you're talking to him. Leave him a cup of dry food and water every day no matter how tame he acts. Make sure you rub the dry food through your hands so that any he food he eats smells like you. Eventually he will learn that you mean food, and that visiting while you talk to him gets him lots of GOOD food. Once he's regular about getting the canned food, set it closer and closer to your hand until you can wiggle your fingers and pet him. Eventually he will be a pet, though maybe never a housecat.

I've done a couple of stray cats this way, but they were dumped cats and not truly feral. But if your boy is sleeping in a car seat, I'd say he's a scared dumped pet and not feral.

Thanks, Wegotchickens...I think he may be someone's uncared-for cat. I should probably put up a sign, but I really don't want to.

I like the food ideas. I just went out and showed him some milk rings. I actually got to see where he was hiding, so he saw me fidgeting with the best cat toy ever, and being a kitten, he perked up for a second or two.

I will try your ideas!

I've gotten a couple of good cats that way. Seems to me they stay where there's love and care. And a truly concerned pet owner will come looking for him.

If he's a kitten, and into toys you're handling, then my method should work great.

I used to catch up on phone calls while trying to get to strays used to me. So when they became pets they automatically thought me talking on the phone meant cuddle time with extra petting. And the same with the kittens/cats I re-homed to friends after 'taming'.
