I gut both crumbles and pellets -depwnda on what's on the shelf over the last few months at TSC.
A) I want to have space to make FF actually and thus try "mash". I'm spread too thin currently.
B) there are a tone of threads out there and admittedly I haven't looked to see if any articles are visible just yet.
C) odd note over the last few weeks the girls have gotten *Really* messy with their food. Seriously so.... Up until about the end of June I'd admit that 2-5% was wasted on the ground. However, it's crazy that I'm now ready to go back and look at those simple PVC pipe designs of feeders the keep the food in the 'bucket/pipe/jug' what-have-you.

Current wasted foodeasily 25-40% is now ending up on ground around the feeders. So much so that the last almost 2 wks now I'm only filling it ~1/3 to 1/2 with either food shape.....

The feed we use only comes as a crumble, and it works for the chicks right on up, so it's handy to only have one feed everywhere.
Agree that there's usually less waste with pellets, but not fine for the chicks.
Once we tried a local mill's mash, and it wasn't that good a feed, so haven't done that again.
Would never use a whole grain feed here.
