Official BYC Poll: Where Do You Get Your Eggs From When Your Hens Are Molting?

I still have to buy eggs from the shop, molting or not. My silkies aren't very reliable layers, they lay for a week or two then just stop for a month

We have never run out of eggs. Our flocks are staggered in age. So there are always some hens that are in their peak egg laying cycle. We have found that freeze drying the eggs that we use for baking and in other recipes. Saves refrigerator space and gives us a reserve. For when our hens do have a dip in production.

I have so many hens from different breeds that are different ages. I just get eggs from the hens that aren't moulting.

No eggs from my hens means no eggs on the table in any form. I’ve been through that many times when I had a smaller flock. I doubt that would happen now with my breeding flocks but if it did, I would not eat or use eggs until they started laying again.

This will be our first molt. So we will see what we will do. Probably just cut back on our egg consumption. We didn't eat many eggs as it was. This kinda forced us to figure out things to do with eggs.

I plan for it by hoarding eggs unwashed in the fridge. That carries us through most of the way and I may end up buying a dozen or two before laying resumes in spring.

We also have quail so we consume more quail eggs when we do not get enough from our chickens.

Same here. We have 80-85 hens so its not an issue here.

Wow that's a lot of hens. What is that you do with so many hens? I'd love to see what your coop looks like.

Since our flock is so staggered and we have ducks, we can normally get by. We do sell eggs though, so in molting season we just don’t sell eggs. Around the holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving we might buy a dozen or so for making a lot of rich food.
