Yeah fireplaces don't come near heating as much as a woodstove. The upstairs of my house is around 1350 square feet and the woodstove heats that pretty good- especially the living room and kitchen. Having a blower on one is the way to go. We have a ceiling fan too and it makes a huge difference in how much of the area it heats.

cool...that's a fair amount of space it can heat then.

Did your home insurance go up because of it? Mine did...but it was already here and installed...it's my childhood home...but when we moved in and sought insurance...

and how should i be cleaning my woodstove and fire place? do you do it yourself or hire out? when i look up it, it doesn't look too bad. My parents didn't burn that much...dad's chair was too close to the stove and he's boil and the fireplace was probably run a couple days at Christmas time. Then when I moved here 8 years ago...my husband was scared to burn anything thinking it was going to catch fire. Now that he's been gone and I've had boiler probs...I burned more but not a ton...not but for a few days till my boiler was up and going again...and it probably went down about half a dozen times this winter.

me,

The stoves (I have one in the basement too) were here when we moved in but our insurance never said anything about them. Many people here still use strictly wood to heat their homes. We have a heating oil furnace but I try not to ever let that turn on because heating oil costs just a little less than road grade diesel.

At this very moment, I am very patiently waiting for the log I put in the fire to burn down enough for me to close the door all the way so I can go to bed. I don't need anymore $107 trips to town anytime soon.
