One drawback of Del Rio is the wind! When we move the little ones out of the brooder and into an intermediate pen, sometimes a strong gust will blow them a foot or two. That's with windbreaks! Day before yesterday, we had sustained winds of 45mph with gusts up to 60. I sometimes worry that I'll walk outside one day and all 60+ adult chickens and the 36 month-old babies will be gone to Oz!
We had wind so bad two weeks ago, part of the North wall of our barn blew off. Yes, you read that right - it blew the heck off. Now that was a lot of fun.
Hope your bundles of fuzz arrive healthy and happy, AccidentalFarm! My youngest chicks are almost three weeks and it's got me wanting more new tiny babies...I'm sick man, I'm sick!
Thanks, Oaknim. I hope they do, too. I've read so many horror stories about so many chicks DOA, that I confess I'm a bit nervous. This is the first ever for me to have chicks shipped.
Dig those talons into the ground and hold on tight, chickies! LOL!
Yes, chickens do seem to be an addiction... we have 60-70 adults, so far this spring we've hatched around 50 chicks (20 or so are going to my grandparents but the rest I'm keeping), and I'm waiting with baited breath for my dozen Araucanas to arrive. And then I'll want more. I think this is about to surpass the "backyard" stage and turn into a full-fledged chicken ranch...
We have about an acre and a half, and the chickens have most of it!
