I promised my husband no roos. So, when I first started this crazy endeavor back on April 1st with my first 6 birds, I picked from the pullet bin. The black sex-links were clearly due to my ignorance, as the girl who got them for me picked out roos and I didn't know the splash on the head meant something.
But then I picked 2 golden sex-links and 2 brown leghorn pullets. The golden sex-links are clearly pullets
but in the past few days, the leghorns are growing combs.
I'm pretty sure at least one is a roo and the other is roo-ish.
So, of my first picks at least 3 of 6 and maybe 4 of 6 are roos.
Thank goodness I bought the 4 Ameraucana pullets from the breeder. I bought 2 EEs that supposedly are pullets and they look it. I also bought 4 RIR which as far as I can tell are still pullets and I purchased 3 black sex-linked pullets once I learned what they looked like. But what the heck am I going to do with 4 roos?
I was thinking of keeping one sex-link roo because they're tame (husband will survive a docile roo), but the leghorns aren't as friendly and they're skinny, so I'm wondering how they're going to butcher with the cornish crosses. Instead of 19 up and coming layers, I'm down to 15.
So, my questions are: do combs come in at 3-4 weeks on leghorn pullets? So far, none of my birds at that age have had combs except the sex-linked roos. If they are roos, brown leghorns are pretty lightweight -- can I still butcher them? I doubt I'm going to be able to find a home for them.
TIA.
