just saw about a 5 foot long black snake in my coop. I have some new girls who are about five months old and they were just walking over it. Can it hurt chickens? The girls aren't laying yet. How do I get rid of him? How do I keep him from coming back? what do I do? thank you. Signed, freaking out

Do you have some hens that lay? the snake is probably after eggs. Don't be afraid for yourself[as long as it's not a rattler], most snakes are harmless to humans. Could you get a pic? i like snakes so I would try to remove it without killing it but many would probably just 'dispatch' it.

I am betting it is after the mice. It is not a threat to you or the chickens. Egg thievery will be light if it occurs, especially if you harvest eggs daily. The snake will not go to a given pullet when she enters to lay an egg to snatch it up immediately. If you are looking for broody action then more potential for trouble that could be beat by making so snake cannot climb up to nest.
