There is obviously a back story to this, though I do not know what. It is both funny and worrisome. I did not post the link because of the inappropriate words used. I also (Censored) any inappropriate words.

As someone who raises chickens it worries me there are people out there that would take off with my birds if they don't like how I raised them.

Dear Madam or Sir,

Due to a long string of events surrounding the protest of a backyard poultry processing class to be held at my house (using old egg-laying hens from a local organic farm), you have decided it would be in the best interests of MY egg-laying hens to liberate them, i.e. steal them from my yard in the middle of the night. What worries me is not so much the trespassing, theft, harassment and dissemination of my private information (such as my home address) to the public, but is the complete misguided step you have taken to ensure I cannot care for my pets anymore. You have stolen my egg-laying hens, which I have raised from wee chicks, and relocated them to God-knows-where.

There are two options here: you traumatized and killed my hens by setting them free in the wilderness, or, you hypocritically passed them on to someone else to enjoy the egg laying benefits.

Lets start with number 1: You took my four hens from my yard last night to set them free in their natural environment away from evil egg-eaters such as myself. They will die because they are domesticated animals and have no ability to fight for themselves. A raccoon will shred the chickens faster than you can (Censored). Great job, there, animal-lover. Was your plan to provide a nutritious meal to the scavenging raccoon population of Portland?

Or, shall we go with number 2: You re-located my pets to some other house where the owners do not know the history of the chickens or have paid the love and attention I have given them for the past 2 years, i.e. raising them from chicks. You are a hypocrite for furthering a lifestyle that allows people to own domesticated livestock. Great job. Although chickens are not the smartest creatures of the animal kingdom, you can be assured they were still traumatized by your kidnapping and relocation process.

What did you expect to accomplish, radical Portland animal rights activist? Did you think you would earn some cred with the Portland Animal Defense League who gave out all my roommates (and therefore my) private information on the internet? Did you want to thoroughly upset and sadden a chicken-owner trying to raise her own eggs instead of resorting to buying nameless farm factory eggs and supporting large corporations? If so, then lets give you a pat on the back for your great success! I guess I will be buying my eggs from the store now and will look out into my backyard where my loving chickens once stood and wonder where to put my tasty vegetable scraps. Your (Censored) would be the next best location.

Sincerely,

Angie

P.S. Return my chickens you ignorant fool. You bring a bad name to all activism.

I have no idea, but considering she mentioned that her information was given out, and that people had complained about a class she was giving, I suspect there is a history. I would love to learn more.

That's sad.

Animal rights activists have "freed" other animals before. It's an extraordinarily misguided and cruel form of protest. I hope she has the local police investigating this theft.

I remember years ago in college having a discussion with someone who felt that we shouldn't enslave animals. She wanted to go to a local farm and "set the cows free". When I replied that the cows she was thinking of freeing were a herd of Holsteins, she replied, "So?". When I explained what would happen to a herd of dairy cows once they stopped being milked, that was news to her!

I also had to laugh at her vision that the cows would go galloping off into the horizon once they were free. Sure, they may look for a greener patch of grass, but once milking time arrived, they'd be lining up at the barn waiting to get in!

Not sure about this particular case, but it is not just chickens. I've found books on Amazon before all about people writing about their wonderful exploits "saving" dogs, cats, horses, etc. by stealing them, and comments on them about what wonderful, amazing, brave people they are. I think they got pulled though, as I can't find them. Also had a rash of missing pets near one area we lived. All the pets were old and thin/had congenital issues/etc, and it was suspected that someone was liberating. There were some really heartbreaking lost posters up for them.

As a lab tech, I also am hyper-aware of animal...liberation. I remember one PI talking about her (white) lab mice that were released. They were found plastered on the roads the next morning. X(

here
is a case involving minks in England

I don't know how many times that it has actually happened in a big way, but there are tons of people that preach that it is our duty. Neighbor's dog isn't being treated to your standard? Sneak over and give him a new home. Don't like the way your neighbor keeps his chickens? take them and give them a new home. Etc etc etc
