Oh No Fly's Fly's Fly's !

How long have you had chickens in your coop? I found when I first had mine there were constantly buzzing flies around, but after a month the girls realized they could eat them. Haven't had a bother of flies since. If it really bothers you, you can scrub your coop down with apple cider vinegar. That should keep the flies at bay for a bit.

I agree with the last poster, I also sprinkle DE in and around the coop/run and I've found that victors fly magnet traps (no spray or poison) work great at getting what the girls missed

I read somewhere on this forum about hanging vanilla-scented car fresheners around to deter the flies. I haven't tried it, but a lot of folks on that thread swore by it.

I use the disposable fly trap that is a plastic bag that takes water to activate the chemical for the smell and to drown the trapped flies. I hang it in my garage and have few flies around the coop or anywhere else. It smells awful, but I guess that's why it works.

I'm with chfite--the disposable trap works quite well, not only for the chicken coops and brooder pen, but also for the front yard under my Mulberry tree. I hang two traps there. All I need to do is keep adding water to the bag--up to the line on the bag--and they work for a few months UNTIL they fill up with dead flies. I use a plastic bag and cut them out of the tree--I use fishing line--to dispose of them. No fuss no mess. They keep flies away from the front door of the house, too. We had a Texas BBQ a few weeks ago and had to move the two traps from under the tree to near the garbage can--about 50 feet away. We had no flies to contend with. The flies were all bee lining to those two traps hung on the chain link fence. Here's the Home Depot advert for it:

Another wondrous fly killer is Golden Malrin, which is manufactured to kill flies. I keep some of this inside an empty 2 liter soda bottle hanging in the feed room and tool shed. The bottles do not have caps and the flies access the bottles that way. Do a search here on BYC and you'll discover other uses for this stuff. Suffice it to say that several skunks no longer prowl around my coops at night.

Don't have an answer for that question, Pam. I only place the Golden Malrin (GM) in the tool shed and feed room AWAY from the chickens. The fly traps are used to attract and trap the flies; the 2-liter bottles with GM are set-up to kill the flies. So the traps are close to the coops and runs.

And when I combine the GM with a can of soda, the dog dish is covered with a small piece of plywood slanted off the coop wall, placed along back wall of the coop near the fence, and ALL chickens are put up for the night. Then I am out before sunrise to see what the GM and soda has dispatched. It does NOT stay out during the day.
