You must have missed the post where Big Charlie updated us with the story of how his rooster did his job today and did it well.
Why would he want to re-home him now? A rooster that's good with the ladies and good at his job is hard to find. Sounds to me like Roo (he really needs a strong manly name, Big Charlie) is a keeper.
I'd keep him as long as he has good manners with people and you don't have neighbors who are upset. The added cost of keeping one non-egg layer is paid by the service he performs in keeping the others safer.
I ended up with an unwanted roo too. I just wanted my 10 little pullets for eggs. Well... One of them turned into Mr. Frizzle. My kids were already very attached to this bird since is was the only frizzle. I told them as long as he remained nice he could stay. And I tell you, he's only 25 weeks and is the coolest critter that has happened to this zoo. Even my husband who reluctantly let me get the chickens loves him. He refused to hold any of them, until one day I caught him picking Mr. Frizzle up and talking to him. Roosters have so much personality you (and your wife) will grow the love him. As for the crowing, it's not so bad. And it's fun to watch I think dogs barking is more annoying. Give him a chance. I wouldn't give up my roo for anything. Good luck!
I have an accidental roo too. He's wonderful and does a great job of protecting his ladies. I'm so glad we have him because he has sounded his roo alarm a few times when a hawk got too near. LOVE HIM!
Along with what silkiechicken said, I see two options for you. Caponize him OR eat him. Of course you could give him away on craigslist, but why turn away a tasty dinner?
Both of my roosters were accedental too.I thought I was getting a white leghorn hen and a rhode island red hen,so i would have white and brown eggs. When they started crowing I knew I had 2 roosters.I am just glad that both of them are as friendly and as nice as can be to me,and very watchful for predators.I think you should keep him if you can.The crowing doesn't bother me anymore, and most of my neighbors have roosters and hens,so they have no problem with it.
