Just found a cracked egg in the nesting box. Does this look like it was pecked? Or maybe just cracked on the wood? I have hay in there for them, but they always push it out of the way and lay directly on the bare wood.

Here's the odd little story leading up to the find, probably not a necessary read, but I'll share anyway. I went out to check for eggs earlier and found one of my EEs in the nesting box that hadn't laid before. No other eggs. Came in and got a shower. When I got out I heard what I assumed was the "egg song" so I went back out to check. What I found was two of my BR in the coop and one of them was the one making the noises. There was also a different EE standing over the egg. It was laying cracked side down. I picked it up without noticing at first and was like hmm, I wonder what that liquid is in the nesting box. When I checked out the egg I realized it was a little bit of white that had leaked out. So what I'm wondering is, was the egg pecked and then rolled or did it crack when it hit the wood. If it was pecked, which of the three suspects did it. And, what was the meaning of the noises the BR was making. It was kind of like this: bawk bawk BAAAWK bawk bawk BAAWK. It didn't sound angry or threatened or anything, which is why I thought it was from the EE that laid the egg. *shrugs* I guess I have a lot to learn.

That's good to hear. There was more hay in there, but they pulled a lot of it into the coop and pooped in it so I can't put it back. Maybe I'll get a bag of shavings and try that underneath what's left of the hay.
