I have a bonded pair of ex breeder cockatiels( my guess is about 1o+ years old as we got them 4 years ago and they bred many sets of babies), today I think the girl had a stroke she is unbalance, shakes her head uncontrolably and can't talk, hopefully she gets better but if not what should I do? Should I let him be lonely or get him a friend, like a budgie? poor boy he loves his girl and is confused as to why she won't call back!

I'm sorry to hear that your girl is having difficulties. Have you tried covering her cage and making sure that she is warm? Do you have any other bird people that live near you that can take a look at her and help you?

She has now passed away, I had to go and do a test and after I was going to drive hours to seek help, poor baby! Now the male is so upset!

I'm sorry. It is so sad to lose them. It sounds like she had a nice long life. A stuff toy might help her mate feel a little better, or it might just make him scared. But you could set one beside his cage and see how he reacts.

My kids are quite upset, the girl was so sweet, the boy has always been defencive towards everyone, even me, alway putting on a wing show and hissing if we entered his cage, the girl would tell him off because I bring treats;) So sad, I havn't heard his sexy whistle all day, I love when he does that, he is sitting and just waiting:( I wonder if they have a short memory and will give up waiting. These guys were a hoot, the have imitated other birds, the guinny pigs cry, pritty bird. I have no idea what I'll do without her!

Give him time an special treats. I had an old breeder pair of amazons that my neighbors later owned. I know they were at least 40 years old. The hen died, and the male was very quiet for a month or so. He just sat on his perch and did nothing. They made sure he had some of his favorite foods and added vitamins to his diet. He eventually came around and has decided that humans are pretty entertaining. As a breeder his job was to take care of the hen and defend their nesting area, so he could be crappy too, but now he is a pretty friendly guy.
