This is just like Little Lou , just not as bad... I hope. Stan is my 20 week old Pekin, I posted on here before that he is like a puppy and filled me everywhere. Today he got hurt, pretty bad, right around his oils gland. There were no dogs out at this time, everyone was in barns except some of the ducks because we had a horrible sleet, and ice and rain stormy day. I saw nothing except that Stan didn’t want to come in at the end of the day and then I saw the blood.

I took him to the house, did the normal bathing, peroxide, neosporin, bacitracin, bandage, vitamin B complex , food/water and rest in my office. 5 minutes later the bandage was off. Did that again. And again. Once more.

Now I’m writing, I think it won’t stay on because he’s a Pekin and so fluffy. I don’t want to use vet wrap because of where it is. I di trim many feathers around the wound but I don’t want to trim his bumm

Next issue. When I went to get pictures to show you all... he pooped and there may be a tinge of blood in there? Oh please don’t let it be!! There is no avian vet anywhere even close and no way will my vet even try! Jerk

How is Stan doing today?
You already started the right treatment, the only thing i would have added is the purple spray when no bandage can be attached.
Try the meal-worm or peas test: A duck that eats meal-worms and/or peas will very likely survive! - There was one day when my drake Limpy refused to eat even the tastiest meal-worm and i was sure he wouldn't make it…
He poops and that's a good sign! Other than that, keep him warm and clean, a lot of rest and he will start to make many little ducklings in spring. ;)
Good thing that he is a pet-like duck, so he is used to be around you and isn't scared.

The important question is how that has happened?
This looks a little bit like something has "tasted" Stand and found him not tasting good and let go…
Or are there any sharp objects, like fence wires (with barbs?) where he could have injured himself?

He’s doing much much better..no bloody poops anywhere, so that one that night may have been from the blood dripping off his back. Then, when I let him out to clean him up, he took off. I thought I’d let him meander a bit and stay by the house to see how was, but nope..he was like flash lightning! And you know Pekins, they are not that fast! Lol. I didn’t want to scare him so I walked behind to see what was soo important. He went straight to the pond! Man he played! It was great to watch. It’s funny, because, I had the Blu Kote in my hand to spray when I let him put but he was too fast! So, I keep going back. No one is
I king on him or his booboo. I tried to spray from a foot away but he moved. I’ll bait him. Clearly he’s doing good and it wasn’t as bad as it looked...thank heaven!

I looked everywhere for something that could’ve hurt him. We have no barbed wire, nothing sharp that I could see, but clearly I need to look again. Only thing..if he was sneaking through, why would it catch him on the thin part? I was thinking perhaps a predator missed..or, they don’t miss, huh?

Hmmm, is this a natural pond? I worry about turtles.
We did have snapping turtles in the summer but we took great lengths to catch them all out...but the guy that taught us said that they burrow deep and can come back years from now so you cannot really get rid of them unless you net it off, etc

But, when we had the turtles, our goose was attacked and the ducks would not go near the pond for months...even after we fished them..then, one day..our Muscovy went in like nothing and bam, they all went in. All the ducks are in there today. I was told, after a turtle attack they sense the danger and don’t go back?

Also, when the turtle attacked, it was from the bottom. Stan is hurt on the top, by his oil gland. Plus, don’t turtles hybrinate at this time of year? I’m sorry for rambling...but, if it’s a turtle, I want to keep my ducks out until we can do something next year, you know?

Yes, turtles should hibernate at the moment and i have no idea - wait!
Do you have wild turkeys in your area? I had a neighbor whose chickens were attacked by a wild turkey and it looked very similar. They just get annoyed and lash out but won't eat the duck or the chicken - of course.
