OH NO! Please tell me it isn't so!!

hmmmmm, 3 years of wishing = a ton of broody grants!

I just bought 4 more chicks that I don't need, to try to break two broodies. One took all the chicks, the other is still, guess what, warming an empty nest.

I also had a broody decide to start mothering my last chicks (that I bought to try to break another broody.) Trouble is, those chicks are 4-5 weeks old. To my utter amazement, she is still trying to mother them, and staying off the nest. They're not quite sure what to make of her, and sleep on a nest by themselves or on the roost.

At least they're entertaining.

One of my five, almost six week old chicks whose mother kicked her loose a couple weeks ago has decided she wants to be a baby again. She sees the week olds being mothered and thinks it looks nice and cozy, so... every night she tucks herself in with the week olds under the broody. Looks kinda funny, the broody half standing to accomodate this larger chick with her five, week old chicks surrounding that one. I just shake my head, bid them all goodnight and close the door.

BTW, whoever started the nasty rumor that silkies are good mothers obviously never met Jethro. At least three times now I have had to rescue her chicks (both the one she hatched and her store bought ones) after she wandered in the coop at night leaving them to fend for themselves outside. She mothers them just fine if they manage to follow her in the coop, but if they don't then its their tough luck.

Jethro must have talked to my hens. Mine will sit on eggs and be just wonderful little hens. Then the babies come and they are the worst mothers.

Hens were no where to be seen. So off I go to raid mommas of the babies i didn't see yesterday.

This afternoon 3 of my older chicks were wanting the same thing, but that broody wouldn't have any of it, and the poor little 3 or 4 day old chicks were terrified. Usually I'd have them loose with the flock by now but it's obvious the chicks and mama want no part of this when I open the door and watch.

I may have to start naming them to make these conversations intelligible. They're individuals to me, but I think of them as things like, BA mama, good mama, injured mama (even though she has recovered,) jerkface, sweetie, the pretty pullet, etc.

Gritty,

I am asking really nice, please post pictures of the NN/Brahma crosses. I was intrigued by pgpoultry's pics. The chicks are burley to say the least at 6 weeks. No slender swan-necked babies - they look like they work weights and want to grow up to be offensive linemen. I am curious to see if your's are the same.

I think the Polish/NN cross should prove, interesting, especially if the rock hairdos show up.

Just asking nicely
