oil gland... ugh. is this normal?

Usually it looks like a yellow clumpy thing (probably not a great description, but it fits) under the nipple. I wouldn't be alarmed by a bit of blood, though. I'd tell him in the future to make sure he does a thorough job when processing your birds. If you're anything like me you hate surprises in your food.
 
He doesn't, huh? I think leaving the gland imparts an odd flavor to the meat nearby. I always remove mine, but different strokes for different folks I guess. It's nice that you found a good butcher.
