Puget Sound Baby!
My Ameraucanas have finally begun to lay! YEA! One of them, who began to lay last month, laid beautiful light sea foam blue-green eggs. I was so proud!

However, lately her eggs are almost white now. What's up with that?

She gets an organic layer mix, b.o.s.s. and fresh greens daily. She is currently in a large coop with some daily free range but not ALL day-due to hawks and other dangerous wildlife.

I've had chickens all my life, but these are my first Ameraucana, so I don't know if this is normal or not.

Please educate me!

Thats ok.

I know that the rest of my bird's eggs vary subtly in color from day to day. But they never go from their normal color range to almost white.

I had 3 Easter Egger's (not pure blood) and 2 of them laid sage green eggs and 1 laid beautiful blue eggs. Occasionally, they will vary in colour - usually a bit lighter and sometimes darker than normal...never had any go "white". I think it's just the normal variations that occur from time to time especially when they first start laying. Unfortunately, something got 2 of my EE girls so I'm now down to just one

. It' so fun to see those different colours in the box, so I'm thinking this Spring I'll just have to get some more EE's!

Thanks!

Do you notice the inconsistancy when they are new layers? Do you ever get an almost white egg from a normal blue layer?
Thank you so much for helping me solve the mystery!

Thanks Valentinebaby!

Ok. well we will chalk the pale whitish egg up to a young, new layer.

I have a wonderful EE that lays dark olive colored eggs that are even dark olive colored on the inside of the shell. I love her, her name is Olive!

I know that a hen's eggs can start to pale in color as the laying season goes on, then she takes a break, and when she starts up again, the eggs are vibrant once again. That won't apply to your new layer, though. Sorry.
