I have a hen that hatched out 3 little ones 2 days ago...

Since then, the other hens have been laying in her spot..

went to collect the eggs today and one is peeping.. obviously the mama hen had one that didn't hatch according to her time schedule and left it..

I've brought it in the house.. have no incubator! I put it in a little toddler's shoe box with a wet washcloth under it .. covered it lightly with some cloth and put a heat lamp above it..

The temp now is about 92 degrees...

Honestly.. I have no idea what i'm doing , but I don't want this chick to die!!!...

ADVICE ... PLEAAAAAAAAASE!

Oh my......if it is peeping it is close! I have my fingers crossed for you, but have no advice to offer....hope someone more experienced sees this for you.

Maybe a small tubberware container would be better wouldn't it keep moisture in better? A see through one would work best you could put the light over the lid and a wet sponge or whatever inside and close the lid. I have no idea Im just trying to help.

Well... I'm hopeful!!

Yesterday.. I thought I heard peeping .. but then told myself I was hearing things..

Now , I know there was peeping, but that poor little thing survived all night long here.. temp in the coop was probably 65-70 , humid with thunderstorms .. so, I'm hoping that if it was able to survive that and still peep to me this morning that it has a possibility of surviving!...

I'll try and up the temp and humidity.. but honestly I don't have a way to measure the humidity..only the temp!

More advice WELCOME!!!

other than increasing the temp and keeping all fingers and toes crossed I have no what to do. Oh, I remember...you have to turn the egg frequently, I think at least 3 -4 times a day so the little bugger does not get stuck....An chance that you coul sneak him under the momma hen or do you have another broody? I don't know if tha would work.....

Is there a pip yet? I would not turn it, you do not turn them the last 3 days before hatch so leave it on it's side. Put it in a container with vent holes, add a wet sponde and heat....Hope for the best. Good luck with the little one.

So sorry...I guess I didn't finish reading the part of the not turning the last 3 days.....I thought it was done until they pip. Did not want to mislead you.

Glad you got the right info!!!! Let us know if it works....

Just my opinion -- if the egg has a crack or a pip already, and that's why you can clearly hear him peep, well then you should begin to help him out of the egg. It's not too early if the others hatched 2 days ago, right? I've done it with no problems. Research on BYC how to do it carefully and slowly. Don't wait untill the peeping stops! This worked for me on a day late chick 3 days ago and the peep was very happy and healthy. GOOD LUCK!! Fingers crossed for you!
